OCC Easter Sunrise Service 6:30am 6th St Ship Bottom

Easter Sunrise service 6th Street Beach, Ship Bottom

We gather for a brief service remembering the way Jesus rose from the tomb early in the morning on the first day of the week. This is the traditional reason that we worship on Sunday, which is the first day of the week, rather than Saturday, the traditional Sabbath day. Each Sunday gathering for worship is a remembrance of the resurrection of Jesus! Christ is risen, he is risen indeed!

OCC Good Friday Community Service 12 noon

In this Good Friday Community Service, six local pastors will share meditations reflecting on the dimensions of the cross. Our gathering over the years has been a time to recognize our shared faith, and to pray as well for our community. We pray for those who are displaced by storms this past year in Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico, as well as those in our own community still recovering from Superstorm Sandy. We also pray for the various ministries among us that are seeking to respond to the significant challenges posed by homelessness, youth violence, and heroin overdose/addiction here and across the country. Any offerings received today will go to the support of the ministry of WYRS, local Christian radio.

OCC Maundy Thursday tenebrae service tonight at 7pm

Tenebrae: A Service of Shadows

The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the common folk during Holy Week. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae.

Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and death; we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming sound of the “strepitus”, reminding us of the stone being rolled to close the entrance to the garden tomb, as Jesus dies and is buried.
